• What is the 'Desktop' file that Kill~Desktop™ eliminates?
The Macintosh 'Desktop' file is an invisible file which prior to System 7.0 was used to store file information (icons, GetInfo comments, bundle resources etc.). Upon the introduction of System7.0, the Desktop file was eliminated and replaced with a true invisible desktop database.
•Who needs Kill~Desktop™?
If you just bought a new Macintosh and have ONLY used System7.0 or later, then you don't really need Kill~Desktop™. However, if you've been a Macintosh user for a while and have used systems prior to 7.0, or you are a Macintosh user who frequently switches between System7.0 and prior versions on the same machine, then you need Kill~Desktop™!
•What does Kill~Desktop™?
Kill~Desktop™ is an application which purges all of your Desktop files, freeing up the disk space the useless Desktop files now take up.
•How much space will I save using Kill~Desktop™?
Anywhere from a few tens of kilobytes to several hundred, depending on how many different types of files you've had on your machine, how often you've "rebuilt the desktop", etc.
•How do I run Kill~Desktop™?
Just double-click on the Kill~Desktop™ icon. Kill~Desktop™ will scan all of your mounted disk volumes and display their current status. If Kill~Desktop™ locates a Desktop file, it will automatically delete it. That's it!
•Will Kill~Desktop™ remove Desktop files from floppies or tape drives?
No. The Macintosh still needs the invisible Desktop file on demountable volumes, in order to maintain compatibility with pre System7.0 machines.
•What if I switch back to a system prior to 7.0 ?
The Desktop file will be automatically recreated by the Macintosh. The only evidence you have of this is that it will take a little longer to initially mount the disk drives, the first time you try.
•What if I switch between pre 7.0 and 7.0 or later systems? Can Kill~Desktop™ help?
Yes. Place a copy or an alias of Kill~Desktop™ in the folder called "Startup Items" in your System Folder. Then everytime you go from pre7.0 to 7.0 or later, Kill~Desktop™ will automatically free up the diskspace used by the Desktop files.
•Can I run Kill~Desktop™ on a system prior to 7.0?
Yes, but you'll get a message saying that you need to be running System7.0 or later to eliminate your Desktop files. Nothing is altered.
